MY God. How many times today have I checked where my books are on Amazon? Oh I don't know - could it even be into double figures? No way - that would be madness when it's only updated once an hour, wouldn't it?
What on earth was I thinking and why should I care? This is pure vanity, or desperation perhaps.
Well it would be if it was only my books I was checking up on. But I'm also clocking how other jobbing writers are faring. I see I'm even at number two on a list of books by authors with the same name... (Of course by the time you click on that link, it may be well, number 17.)Nobody apart from me is really counting, are they? This is just one book store. (It's a shame my books aren't in more actual shops where there are like, living breathing people behind the counter, but you can't have everything....)
Today's tally may be a little excessive but it's by no means far from typical. Ask me what the highest number on the list my works have reached, give me time to ponder...hang on, thinking about it, I don't need any time to ponder...it was (drum roll) 2,000 and something. And the lowest? Let's just gloss over that, shall we? I think one is currently languishing below the 600,000s.
I don't think I'll crack open the bubbly just yet. I'm just glad I'm not alone.

The only time to worry with Amazon is if you're on The Bible's listing and feel tempted to click the "I am the author" button.
