WHAT are you working on today?
For me, one of the best things about working for yourself is deciding exactly what you are going to spend your time on. (My apologies, I fear I may be stating the obvious!)
Like any chosen path in life, there are good days and bad days. Today happens to be a good day.
My current writing jobs include:
* A story in The Sun about a woman quizzed by police over a missing shuttlecock (yes you read that right.) Today I'm also contacting women's magazines in the hope of selling the same story.
* Daily updates for Twitterati. This one is my favourite so far
* Another Technobile piece. (Here's the last one.)
* More stuff for DollyMix
* Having everything crossed that a couple more pitches will come off.
* Lots of website, newsletter and press release copy
* My first piece for The Times.
* A story about a couple who conceived after IVF after the man recovered from testicular cancer.
If you're embarking on a freelance career, then you need to keep your options open. I've never been very good at turning away work, grabbing every opportunity with both hands and working through the night if needs be.
But that's not for everyone. That's the beauty of freelancing - do as little or as much as you like. So long, of course, that you can afford it. My first month of working for myself, I billed out the princely sum of £160 - for two days' PR for a charity.
Times have changed now. And what have I learned? I suppose my best advice would be, work hard, file on time and if things go t*ts up, hold your hands up and explain. Editors are human too, you know. [Linda]
